The five largest exchange-traded fund (ETF) providers in the U.S. saw a sharp reduction in assets managed under their various ETF offerings over Q3 2015 due to weak market conditions. But the asset base grew steadily over subsequent quarters thanks to steady inflows of assets coupled with improved valuations to reach record levels by the end of Q2 2016.

Assets managed by U.S.-listed ETFs are currently at a record level of almost $2.3 trillion – roughly 70% of total ETF assets worldwide. Notably, the five largest ETF providers detailed above are responsible for more than 88% of total U.S. ETF assets, and their share of the market has grown steadily over recent quarters. That said, there is a sizable difference in ETF assets managed by the top-3 providers (BlackRock, Vanguard and State Street) compared to Invesco and Charles Schwab.
