A quiet day for the averages masked a day of sharp divergence for individual stocks.

The major indices were nearly flat, with the S&P 500 returning -0.2%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average 0.0%, and the Nasdaq-100 -0.7%. Yet beneath that surface, single-stock volatility was extreme, led by Elastic (ESTC) which returned +19.3%. The central question is what separates such a large gain from the day’s biggest loss. The one-day tables frame the contrast.

Today’s extremes are fresh moves, not continuations.

The day’s biggest winner, Elastic (ESTC), and biggest loser, LightPath Technologies (LPTH), down 18.6%, highlight the churn. No stock appears on both the one-day and one-month leaderboards on the same side today. This suggests the market is rewarding and punishing new names. ESTC, with a market value of about $10.4 billion and revenue growth of 17.3%, now trades at 28.3 times trailing earnings (on trailing earnings that include at least one loss quarter, so the multiple is not comparable to a clean-year multiple). In contrast, LPTH has a market value of about $658.4 million and revenue growth of 86.7%.

So what is a movers list for?

The tables of winners and losers earlier in this report are not instructions. A large price change is simply information, a signal that a new level of attention and risk is attached to a company. The disciplined response is not to chase the move, but to investigate the business behind it. A movers list is a map of the market’s focus, and a useful one, but it is never a substitute for your own work on the fundamentals of a company.

The next step is never to trade the list; it is to test it. Our Guidance Momentum screen shows which risers have management raising guidance behind them, and our Buy the Dip screen shows which of the fallers still generate the growth and cash that make a recovery plausible.

Volatility Is The Cost Of Owning Stocks. Concentration Makes It A Bill

Every name on these lists made a move big enough to notice. A diversified holder reads that as noise; a concentrated holder feels it as real money. The difference is not the stock, it is the portfolio around it.

Building that portfolio is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does: roughly 30 businesses with the cash generation and balance-sheet strength to absorb bad days, selected and rebalanced by rules. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. Let the movers list remind you why diversification exists.
