Quanta Services (PWR) stock closed on October 21, 2026, 23.4% below the high it reached in May. Despite that drop, $10,000 invested in the stock ten years earlier was worth $212,117 before dividends. The same money in the S&P 500 grew to $36,226. Holding on for that gain looks easy in hindsight. It was not. How many times do you think the stock fell 20% or more along the way?

Falls of 20% or more from a closing high, Oct 2016 to Oct 2026. Split-adjusted closing prices, dividends excluded.

The deepest fall occurred between November 2019 and March 2020, when the stock lost 45.6% while the S&P 500 fell 27.2% over the same dates. Shareholders then waited 4.5 months from the low, and about nine months from the November 2019 high, before the stock closed above its previous peak.

The longest wait accompanied a smaller drop. After peaking in January 2018, Quanta stock spent 15.1 months below its high, leaving investors waiting more than a year just to reach that level again.

What Does Holding Quanta Through A Fall Feel Like?

Shareholders are currently living through the latest drop. The decline began in May 2026, and by its low on July 29, less than three months later, Quanta stock was down 28.5%. The stock has not closed above the May high since. This makes the pullback deeper than five of the eight falls before it, though well short of the one in 2020.

Each of those earlier falls eventually ended. Nobody holding the stock in the middle of those declines knew that at the time, and nobody holding the shares today knows when the current drop will end.

Was Something Wrong With Quanta’s Business?

Quanta performs electrical and underground infrastructure work. The company’s Electric segment generated 80.8% of revenue in fiscal 2025, with the rest coming from the Underground and Infrastructure segment.

The underlying business barely changed during the deepest fall. Twelve-month revenue stood at $12.1 billion at both the high and the low, while the operating margin slipped only slightly, from 5.0% to 4.8%.

The business grew during the current drop. Twelve-month revenue rose 9.2% between the May high and the July low, though Quanta reported the June quarter only on July 30, the day after the low. The operating margin widened from 5.6% to 6.1%. Revenue did not fall between the high and the low during either period. Declines like these are the risk that comes with holding the stock.

What Selling Quanta Stock Would Have Cost

Quanta stock is up about 2,426% since its low in March 2020. An investor who sold at that bottom missed every bit of that rise.

The challenge of owning Quanta was never picking the stock. The hard part was sitting through the declines, which were the cost of that ten-year gain. Quanta is expected to report again in October 2026. The next time Quanta stock drops hard, check whether its revenue is falling with it. In the 2020 fall and the current one, it was not.
