Recently Nokia (NYSE:NOK) announced that it is partnering with the Orange Group to develop services that will allow consumers to take advantage of the efficiencies offered by 5G.  Under this partnership, Nokia and the French Telecommunications services provider will leverage the Nokia Flexi Base Station and 5G-ready AirScale radio access portfolio to create applications making use of 5G’s ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability. Also key will be the technoligical strengths of Nokia’s Bell Labs.  With its breadth of technologies and Orange’s expertise in telecommunications services, Nokia plans to bring 5G connectivity to billions of customers and connected IoT devices. The revolutionary 5G technology is estimated to generate nearly $250 billion in annual revenues by 2025, after it is expected to be commercialized by 2020. Several telecom and mobile hardware players are looking to offer this network connectivity to its customers and Nokia’s partnership with the Orange group will ensure that both companies innovate towards building a competitive edge in this developing segment.

While 5G holds strong potential in terms of the efficiencies offered by the network, companies need to innovate on their service offerings to make this a commercial reality. Several players are working on these initiatives and Nokia is also looking to tap into this game changing technology. In a recent study conducted by Qualcomm, it was indicated that 5G will catapult radio-enabled mobile devices into the exclusive realm of General Purpose Technologies such as electricity and automobile that provide the foundation for massive innovation, giving rise to new industries. This will all be under the Internet-of-Things mantel as it becomes a reality in coming years.  According to the study, in 2035, when 5G’s full economic benefit should be realized across the globe, a broad range of industries – from retail to education, transportation to entertainment, and everything in between – could produce up to $12.3 trillion worth of goods and services enabled by 5G.

5G technology is being touted as transformational and a game changer for interconnected devices (massive internet of things MIoT). The technology will lead to better cellular connectivity and improved capacity which will lead to more efficient data transmission at lower costs, leading to higher broadband usage on mobile phones. However, experts believe that it has the potential to transform economies through connected devices covering a gamut of industries ranging from autonomous vehicles to mission critical services. The technology supports applications that require high reliability, ultra-low latency connectivity with strong security and availability. With this capability the technology can be used in a wide range of MIoT applications such as smart agriculture, smart homes, asset tracking, smart cities and physical infrastructure.

5G holds strong potential and is likely to be the technology of the future. While commercial application of this technology is likely to fructify in the next five to ten years, Nokia’s collaboration with Orange gives it a head start in innovation for services linked with this technology. With a wide gamut of industries likely to benefit from this technology, Nokia can benefit significantly once 5G becomes a commercial reality.
