NASDAQ Sees Impressive Growth in Equity Options Trading Volumes In September
NASDAQ (NASDAQ:NDAQ) saw marked growth in its equity options trading volumes in September (66% y-o-y) and Q3 2016 (45% y-o-y) in the U.S. With the completion of the acquisition of International Securities Exchange on June 30th, the company saw a notable increase in its market share to around 40% in the quarter as opposed to around 25% over the past year. This possibly led to a large increase in the trading volumes for the quarter.
The European trading volumes (-8% y-o-y) have continued to decline in the recent months amid political uncertainty and increased competition. However, a 4% increase in the average rate per contract to $0.47 will likely curb the negative impact of the decrease in the European trading volumes on the exchange’s revenue.
Going forward, we expect growth in equity options volumes, driven by continued volatility in the U.S. financial markets. However, the European volumes are likely to remain suppressed with macroeconomic uncertainty to prevail in the near term.
