In its new social media campaign on Twitter, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is offering free Windows Phones to Android malware victims in an attempt to boost its market share. [1] Windows Phone 7 was launched more than a year ago but has failed to gain significant traction while Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS continue to increase their market share at the expense of other platforms like Research in Motion‘s (NASDAQ:RIMM) Blackberry OS and Nokia‘s (NYSE:NOK) Symbian.

With the backing of major smartphone manufacturers, including Nokia, Samsung, HTC and LG, Microsoft is leaving no stone unturned to increase Windows Phone market share in the coming years. It recently launched a new social marketing campaign on Twitter, targeting Android users who are affected by malicious apps on Android. Microsoft’s Windows Phone evangelist, Ben Rudolph, offered free Windows Phones to anyone who would share their experience after being hit with malware on their Android device.

Microsoft has earlier offered free Windows Phones to Blackberry users too. It is aggressively trying to attract new users to the Windows Phone platform, and has been pushing its manufacturing partners to lower device prices and increase their marketing spend. We expect Windows Phone’s market share to increase in the coming years, as it’s the only good alternative available to Android and iOS.

Xbox, Zune, Windows Phone and other devices together account for nearly 8% of Microsoft’s $32 Trefis price estimate, which stands nearly 25% above its current market price. We don’t expect Windows Phone revenues to account for a significant portion of Microsoft’s overall revenues anytime soon.
