How Did Southwest Perform Operationally In July?
As expected, Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) managed to report better-than-expected rises in their monthly metrics for the month of July. The momentum gained towards the end of Q2 is expected to continue well into Q3.
In July, the company grew its capacity by 5.5% y-o-y, bringing the year to date capacity up by 4.7%. Furthermore, the occupancy increased modestly by 40 bps to come in at 87.3%. Additionally, passenger traffic grew at a notable pace of 6%.
Based on these results and current trends, the company continues to expect its third quarter 2017 operating revenue per ASM (RASM) to increase by about one percent, in comparison to the same period last year.
