Shares of Lumentum (LITE) closed at $850.70 on October 21, 2026, down 24.9% from its high close on October 6. A decline of this speed tempts some investors to buy the optical technology supplier at a lower price, while pushing others to sell before the stock falls further. Lumentum shares have dropped this hard before. So what happened to buyers after those earlier drops?

Did Lumentum Stock Recover After Earlier Drops?

The stock usually recovered, though not every time. Since August 2015, Lumentum has recorded 15 drops of this magnitude, defined as a fall of more than 20% over 30 trading days. Of the 14 drops with a full year of trading history behind them, 11 left the stock higher twelve months later, posting a median gain of 26.5%. The latest of those earlier drops occurred in June 2026, making it too recent to judge.

Buyers paid for those gains in patience. In the year following a typical decline, the lowest closing price for the stock was 13.9% below its price on the day of the drop, meaning investors usually sat through a further fall at some point that year. Shareholders then waited a median of 186 days, or roughly six months, to see the stock’s best price of that year. Three of the past drops still left buyers holding a loss a year later, with the worst outcome being a 36% decline following the drop of September 2022.

Lumentum Is Growing Fast And Producing Cash

Lumentum reported revenue of $1.01 billion in fiscal Q4 2026, the quarter ending June 27, marking a 109.3% increase from a year earlier. The company posted an operating margin of 28.0% for the quarter, swinging to a profit from a small operating loss a year before. The underlying business generates cash as well: operations produced $751 million over the four quarters through June, or 24.9% of revenue.

The bottom line remains the standout figure. Lumentum reported a net loss of $7.2 billion for fiscal Q4 2026. Management said the loss came from a one-time non-cash charge of $7.8 billion, recorded after the company turned a portion of its convertible notes into shares. By doing so, Lumentum reduced its debt by $1.1 billion. The charge was large because those notes were in the money after the stock’s rise over the past year, management said.

What Are You Paying For Lumentum Now?

Investors are paying a price far above the market’s. Because the recent net loss makes a price-to-earnings ratio not meaningful, sales provide a clearer valuation measure: at the October 21 close, Lumentum traded at 24.1 times its sales over the past year, compared with 3.1 times for the S&P 500. A buyer at that price is paying for the growth to continue, and management expects it to. Management set a guide for fiscal Q1 2027 revenue of $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion, a range above what Lumentum reported for fiscal Q4.

If you buy Lumentum now, you are betting that this drop ends like most of the earlier ones, after a further fall along the way, and that the company continues growing fast enough to justify a price far above the market’s. Revenue measured against that guide is the number to watch when Lumentum reports, which the company is expected to do in November 2026.

How To Act On LITE?

Not necessarily on Lumentum alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Lumentum is one. Over the five years to October 2026, its stock rose 902%, ahead of 34 of the 35 other companies in Communications Equipment, where the typical company rose 64%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000. See how we find the leaders.
