Shares of Lumentum (LITE) fell 25.3% in the five trading sessions from October 9 to October 16, 2026. The S&P 500 lost 1.9% over the same stretch. Although the company’s chief executive stated on Friday, October 9, that AI demand had booked capacity through early 2029—lifting the shares 5.2% that session—the slide began the following trading day, Monday, October 12. So what changed between that Friday and the following Monday?

What Hit Lumentum Stock On Monday, October 12?

Lumentum dropped 9.8% on Monday, October 12. This was the largest one-day decline of the week, placing the company at the front of a sell-off that began in specialized optical components and rippled across broader networking hardware. A market report that day noted the shares pulled back hard after a significant surge the prior week, and that over the weekend, a major AI tech chief executive had suggested investors may not understand what they are investing in. Lumentum’s peers also fell over the same five sessions, though none dropped as far: Adtran lost 15.4%, Cisco 9.3% and F5 7.9%.

Demand for Lumentum products continues to outpace factory production. Reports on October 12 still described the company’s order book as booked solid through early 2029. During the August 11 call, executives stated Lumentum would remain effectively sold out of pump laser supply for the foreseeable future, despite rapid capacity expansion.

Is Lumentum Still Priced Far Above The S&P 500?

Yes. After the fall, Lumentum stock still costs 23.4 times its sales over the past year, compared to 3.1 times for the S&P 500. At the end of June, the stock traded at 24.3 times the same twelve months of sales. That marked the highest multiple in 40 quarter ends going back to fiscal 2017. After the fall, the multiple sits only slightly below that June level, and the share price still appears to assume today’s growth lasts for years.

So far, sales are growing at that rapid pace. Revenue for fiscal Q4 2026, the quarter ended June 27, reached $1.01 billion, up 109.3% from a year earlier. On the August 11 call, management guided revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 to a range of $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion.

What The Fall Did Not Change At Lumentum

Lumentum reported a net loss of $7.2 billion for fiscal Q4 2026 following a one-time non-cash charge of $7.8 billion, as outlined on the August 11 call. Given that loss over the last twelve months, Lumentum lacks a meaningful price-to-earnings multiple.

At the same time, the operating margin rose in every quarter of fiscal 2026. It climbed from 2.8% in the first quarter to 28.0% in the fourth. The company also ended June with $2.74 billion in cash and short-term investments, against $1.67 billion of debt. None of those figures moved with the share price.

Demand for Lumentum lasers continues to outrun supply. The open question remains whether sales will keep growing into the price. Investors will look to Lumentum’s revenue and operating margin for the first quarter of fiscal 2027 to gauge that trajectory, with the report expected on or around November 5, 2026.
