Shares of Lumentum (LITE) fell 19.3% in the week to October 14. The retreat came despite upbeat comments from management earlier in the week, which had briefly sent the stock higher. Even with that drop, the stock remains up 458% over the past year, compared with a 17.3% gain for the S&P 500. Buyers at today’s price appear to be betting that Lumentum can continue to manufacture and profit from the optical and laser components AI data centers want. So how far did Lumentum stock fall when the whole market turned?

In Selloffs, Lumentum Has Lost Double What The S&P 500 Lost

Lumentum has historically taken outsized losses during market shocks. The stock fell 31.8% on average during market shocks since it began trading in 2015, compared with a 14.7% decline for the S&P 500. It fell less than the market only once, losing 29% during the pandemic selloff while the S&P 500 lost 34%. Yet the shares typically recovered quickly. The median wait from the low to the prior peak was 2.4 months.

The company took its hardest hit during the late 2018 growth scare, falling 39% alongside a 19% drop in the S&P 500. Following that low, the stock returned to its peak in 5.6 months. The recovery stretched much longer following the 2022 inflation shock, requiring 33.5 months from the low to complete the climb back.

Lumentum Now Turns Rising Revenue Into An Operating Profit

Revenue for the three months to June, Lumentum’s fiscal Q4 2026, reached $1.01 billion. That figure was up 109.3% from a year earlier. The company posted an operating margin of 28.0% for the quarter, compared with a small operating loss in the same quarter of 2025.

For the full twelve months, the operating margin stood at 17.8%, shifting from a loss of 11.7% of sales in the twelve months before. Both business segments reported sales growth in fiscal 2026, the year to June. Components is the larger segment, and it brought in $2.01 billion, up 79.7%. Systems sales rose 90.7%, following a 1.6% fall the year before.

At the end of June, Lumentum held $2.74 billion of cash and short-term investments. This total exceeded its $1.67 billion of debt.

Can Lumentum Make Enough To Meet Demand?

The company cannot expand production as fast as demand is growing. On October 9, management said demand from AI data centers had effectively booked Lumentum’s production capacity through early 2029. The risk is on the supply side. Management added that demand for Lumentum’s optical and laser components continued to outstrip its ability to raise manufacturing output.

On August 11, management guided fiscal Q1 2027 revenue to $1.23 billion to $1.27 billion, compared with the $1.01 billion recorded in fiscal Q4 2026. Fiscal Q1 2027 has ended, and its results are pending. Revenue against that guide is the measure to watch in Lumentum’s next report.
