The year of 2016 has not been very positive for equity options trading, with 5% and 3% decline in trading volumes, both industry-wide and for IntercontinentalExchange, respectively. We believe this is due to the uncertain macro conditions and investors looking for safer investment option during the first half of the year. The decline in the trading volumes for ICE is also attributed to the continuous loss in market share.

However, the company has been capturing the market since the last couple of months. This, in addition to the increased volatility from the recently concluded U.S. presidential elections, has primarily contributed to 6% year-on-year growth in equity options trading volume for the exchange in November.

We believe the volatility in the market will continue until the investors have a chance to assess the impact on Donald Trump’s election on the U.S. industries and consequently take positions. This will likely keep the trading volumes high in the near term. The company’s subsidiary NYSE has announced its intention to acquire the National Stock Exchange, Inc. (NSX), which is likely to expand its market share in equity options and cash equities.
