Facebook Partners With Antivirus Makers To Fight Clickjackers

Facebook’s user base has ballooned to more than 900 million monthly active users, which has made it a favorite target for hackers. It’s a common hunting ground where hackers prey on unsuspecting noobs eagerly willing to click on links shared by their friends, primarily through clickjacking schemes. This week, Facebook announced that it has partnered with top antivirus makers like Microsoft, McAfee, Sophos, Symantec, and TrendMicro, and is now using the URL blacklists by them to detect and block malicious links from being shared on its network. This will improve the Facebook experience for users and potentially increase engagement, sharing and clicks on the website, which Facebook aims to translate into higher advertising revenue. Facebook competes primarily with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) in the online advertising space. Text and display ads account for 75% of its total value.

Facebook is also offering free trial downloads of top antivirus software offerings through its newly launched AV Marketplace. While it hasn’t announced any details, there could be a referral arrangement through which Facebook earns a certain cut for every converting paid user who purchases the software after the trial ends.
