May proved to be a relatively good month for Chinese wireless carriers, as they cumulatively added about 7.5 million new subscribers, while witnessing 20 million 4G adds/migrations. While market leader  China Mobile  (NYSE:CHL) led the industry with a total of 3.5 million net subscriber adds, its 4G adds slowed down compared to last year, coming in at 9.9 million. The carrier added an average of 18 million 4G users each month in 2016. China Telecom (NYSE:CHA) – the smallest of the three carriers – performed the best relative to its size, adding a solid 3 million subscribers, although its 4G adds were slightly lower month-over-month. China Unicom (NYSE:CHU)  continued to underperform its peers, adding just about 1 million subscribers, likely due to its weaker 4G footprint compared to smaller rival China Telecom.
