The major Chinese wireless carriers had a relatively strong December 2016, with net subscriber additions across the industry standing at roughly 3.3 million for the month, roughly 50% ahead of November, when carriers had a sub par performance on account of the real name registration requirement. High speed net additions were also robust, with the major players adding or migrating a total of 35 million subscribers to their 4G services.

While market leader China Mobile  (NYSE:CHL) continued to lead the industry with 1.7 million net subscriber additions, China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) added 0.83 million subscribers, marking one of its best monthly performances this year, likely driven by its growing 4G footprint and some weakness at rival China Telecom. China Telecom also saw about 0.83 million subscriber adds for the month, marking a slightly improvement over November, although this was well below the firm’s average ~ 1.4 million monthly adds through 2016.
