How Did Chinese Wireless Carriers Fare In April?
April proved to be a relatively strong month for the three Chinese wireless carriers, who together added about 7 million subscribers, marking a slight month-over-month improvement. While market leader China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) led the industry with a total of 3.5 million net subscriber adds, its 4G adds slowed considerably to just 5.3 million. For perspective, the carrier added an average of 18 million 4G users each month, last year. China Telecom (NYSE:CHA), the smallest of the three carriers, posted a solid 2.5 million subscriber adds, driven by its improving 4G performance (20.7 million 4G adds/migrations). China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) continued to underperform its peers, adding just about 1 million subscribers, likely due to its weaker 4G footprint compared to smaller rival China Telecom (740k base stations for China Unicom versus 890k for Telecom as of December 2016).
