The State of The Chinese Wireless Market In October
Chinese wireless carriers continued their relatively strong run on the subscriber front through October, with the big three players adding a total of 4.1 million new subscribers during the month. While this marks a significant jump over reported October 2015 fugures, there was a slight decline compared to September. While market leader China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) continued to lead the industry with 2.16 million net additions and 16.6 million 4G adds/migrations, China Telecom (NYSE:CHA), the smallest player, added about 1.42 million subscribers. The carrier’s subscriber base has expanded by a solid 4% this year. China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) continued to lag its rivals, despite increased marketing and promotional spending, adding just about 0.51 million subscribers, although its 4G migrations remained strong at about 5 million subscribers.
