August proved to be a solid month for the Chinese wireless industry, with the three major carriers together adding about 4.1 million subscribers, marking a marginal improvement over July. While market leader China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) led the industry with 1.92 million net adds, China Telecom (NYSE:CHA), the smallest of the three carriers, saw its subscriber base grow by a strong 1.8 million, marking its second-best monthly performance for 2016. China Unicom’s performance remained disappointing, with the carrier adding just about 430k new subscribers for the month. However, things could pick up during September and October, as the firm has been offering the most attractive promotions on Apple’s latest iPhone 7 in a move that could boost its 4G mix, which remains the weakest in the industry. (related: China Unicom Leans On The iPhone 7 To Shore Up Its 4G Business)
