What Was The Market Share Of The Largest U.S. Card Issuers In Terms Of Outstanding Balances For Q3 2016?

The 10 largest U.S. card issuers hold more than 90% of the total outstanding credit card debt in the country. Notably, the top 4 card issuers have a market share in excess of 58%.

Figures for individual card issuers are at the end of Q3 2016 as reported by them in their quarterly SEC filings. Do note that the figures for American Express and Discover here capture the outstanding balances for cards they issued directly, and not those that are issued for their payment networks by other card lenders. The total card debt figure is as compiled by the New York Fed here.

Among these card issuers, Capital One has seen the fastest growth in its loan portfolio since the economic downturn due to its focused customer marketing strategy coupled with a series of high profile acquisitions (including HSBC’s U.S. card division and ING Direct).
