How Has The Increase In Steel Imports To The U.S. Impacted U.S. Steel’s U.S. Flat-Rolled Steel Operations?
An increase in cheap steel imports into the U.S. has adversely impacted the operations of domestic steelmakers such as U.S. Steel. Robust overall growth in demand for steel in the U.S. propped up the Flat-rolled division’s results in 2014. However, the impact of the increase in steel imports was evident in 2015 (a year in which overall U.S. steel demand growth was fairly subdued), with the Flat-rolled division’s shipments and realized prices declining 14% and 11%, respectively, on a year-over-year basis, primarily due to competition from imports.
