Walgreen recently launched a new online “Find Your Pharmacist” search tool, a first-of-its-kind in the industry, to help its customers make the best of their community pharmacists’ expertise, specialty and background. The offering further builds on Walgreen’s online and mobile-based tools and services for better prescription management and medication. Walgreen competes with the other leading pharmacy services providers CVS Caremark (NYSE:CVS) and Rite Aid (NYSE:RAD).

Walgreen’s latest online tool, “Find Your Pharmacist,” allows customers to find a Walgreen pharmacist with specific areas of expertise, specialty, language and clinical background through a database of over 20K pharmacist profiles, including profiles for medication adherence, immunizations, diabetes management, children’s health, wellness education, medication side effects, HIV, etc. The tool can also be accessed through mobile phones.

Walgreen already offers several tools and services like the 24×7 online one-on-one live chats to answer patient questions and concerns, health-and-wellness database on Facebook, and tools for Pill Reminder, Transfer by Scan and Refill by Scan to better manage prescription needs and increase medication adherence.

Walgreen Leads the U.S. Online Retail Pharmacy Channel

Walgreen has already established itself as the leader of the U.S. online retail pharmacy business with over 12 million monthly unique visitors compared to CVS’ 4.6 million in 2011. Walgreen acquired Drugstore.com last year, which increased its online visitors by over 50%, now nearly three times that of CVS Caremark.
