VMware (NYSE:VMW) has launched the VMware View Mobile Secure Desktop to bring work securely to the mobile. This is a bid to capitalize on the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) movement which is on the rise as employees are demanding work related, sensitive data on their mobile devices. The VMware Mobile Secure Desktop solution allows for worker mobility and BYOD requirements while maintaining IT security requirements as specified by the company to protect confidential data. With the workforce constantly on the move and demanding more mobility, this can turn out to be a significant driver of growth for VMware in the near future. [1]

VMware View Mobile Secure Desktop

The VMware View Mobile Secure Desktop is a completely validated design that provides its users with access to their employers networks, applications and data irrespective of the device and data network. The Mobile Secure Desktop uses existing technologies with proven track records such as VMware View, vShield security and vCOPs monitoring service to provide a solution that streamlines and automates desktop management and provides the IT department with the ability to track and monitor usage, ensuring high levels of security and compliance. VMware partners will also be brought on to support multiple devices and formats to drive the BYOD initiative.

Mobile Devices To Drive Growth In A Post PC Era

VMware expects the BYOD phenomenon to become a huge opportunity in the future and it has already embraced the BYOD phenomenon by implementing it across the organization. It has a vision called End-User Computing and is setting itself up to enable access to enterprise data irrespective of the device used and is targeting mobile phones and tablets. It solves the primary issue of data security with a solution called the VMware Horizon Mobile Virtualization which creates a virtual mobile image, similar to a virtual desktop with access to confidential company information while keeping control with the IT department to de-provision the feature quickly. This means a user can use a business instance to access business information and the usual phone features for personal information. [2]

We currently estimate that the market share of VMware in the virtualization space will fall steadily to ~40% by the end of our forecast period. If the mobile BYOD revolution arrests drop in market share and maintains it to ~45% by the end of our forecast period, we can expect an upside of ~10% to our current Trefis Price Estimate.

We have a $109 Trefis price estimate for VMware, which is ~25% above the current market price.
