Twitter Vs. Facebook: U.S. & International Monthly Active User Growth
Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) has struggled to grow its monthly active user base over the last year in both the U.S. and international markets. The relatively lackluster user growth stands out when comparing the company’s performance with Facebook (NASDAQ:FB). Over the three year period from 2012-2014, Twitter’s user base grew faster than Facebook’s in both the U.S. and international markets. As a result, the ratio of total Facebook to Twitter users declined from over 6 in 2012 to less than 5 in 2014.
In 2015, Twitter’s user growth declined drastically, driven primarily by soft performance in international markets. Twitter’s user base increased by just 4% for the year, while Facebook’s grew by 14%. This was primarily driven by Facebook’s continued strength in international markets, where its user base grew by 15%, compared to 4% for Twitter.
