Against this background, it is interesting to analyze how the four major auto companies — General Motors, Ford Motor, Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Corp — have fared. Toyota is the highest seller of cars in the U.S. auto market among these four companies and it suffered the least over the period, while overall sales of the four companies in the cars segment declined by 4.7%. In comparison, GM benefited hugely from the inventory shortfall of the best selling F-150 trucks at Ford dealerships, overcoming the 14.3% decline in car sales with a 14.8% increase in truck sales to grow its sales by 4.1% over the period. Meanwhile, both Toyota and Honda did well, as they increased their presence in the SUV and Crossover segments.
