Symantec (NASDAQ:SYMC) announced a new hosted mobile security solution for telecom carriers, which will allow them to offer their subscribers enhanced security and protection. The new solution – Accelerated NGNP – can be deployed rapidly by telecom carriers, and allows them to offer their subscribers the ability to improve their safety online by controlling mobile access to websites. Symantec will offer this service in collaboration with Tekmark Global Solutions and Centri Technology. [1] Symantec competes primarily with McAfee by Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), HP (NYSE:HPQ), Trend Micro and Kaspersky in security software for businesses, which contributes more than 15% of its $22 Trefis price estimate. We estimate Symantec’s current market share in security software for businesses to be close to 30% and expect it to increase marginally by the end of the forecast period.

Symantec Plans to Cash in on the Growing Mobile Security Market
Accelerated Next Generation Network Protection (NGNP) is a revamped version of Symantec’s NGNP solution which was unveiled last year. NGNP wasn’t widely adopted by telecom carriers, because of a relatively longer and complicated deployment process. Accelerated NGNP can be deployed much more rapidly without any impact to the operator’s network.
Mobile security is a rapidly expanding market, thanks to the proliferation and explosive growth of mobile devices in the last couple of years. Symantec already offers Norton Mobile antivirus to consumers on mobile platforms like Android. With Accelerated NGNP, it is targeting mobile carriers directly. It will allow subscribers and business to control access to specific websites and allow them to configure content controls to allow or block certain URLs.
