Trefis Weekly Notes: Telecom, Media and Semis

Below we present some of the key events and news from the past week concerning telecom, media and semiconductor industry. More specifically, these updates pertain to Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), Sirius XM (NASDAQ:SIRI), Disney (NYSE:DIS), Time Warner (NYSE:TWX), Pandora Media (NYSE:P), CBS (NYSE:CBS), Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA), AMD (NYSE:AMD) and Nvidia (NASDA:NVDA)

New Developments

Netflix

Starz cable network has decided not to renew its content licensing deal with Netflix, when the current deal expires in Feb 2012. This will imply removal of some Disney and Sony content. ^[1]

Sirius XM

Sirius XM is offering a two week free trial for customers after which it will offer a discount of 60% for 5 month period if the users decide to continue the subscription. ^[2]

Disney

Disney finally opened its new resort at Hawaii. The resort has been in news for issues surrounding wrongly estimating the costs which led to firing of some executives. However it seems that things are on track now. ^[3]

Time Warner

Time Warner’s channel CNN has acquired Zite. Zite is an iPad app that offers users a personalized news stream. The move could help Time Warner gain valuable insights into consumer news reading habits. ^[4]

Gear Up For Upcoming Conferences

Pandora Media

According to company press release, Pandora Media will be presenting at Citi 2011 Technology Conference on Sept 6 2011. ^[5] Additionally, the company will also present at William Blair & Company 5 Annual Emerging Growth Stock Conference on Sept 8, 2011. ^[5]

CBS

CBS stated in its press release that it will be participating  in a question-answer session at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2011 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference on Sept 14, 2011. ^[6]

Comcast

According to a Comcast press release, the company will be participating in the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference on Sept 14, 2011. ^[7]

AMD

AMD has announced that it will be presenting at Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference on Sept 13, 2011 ^[8]

Nvidia

Nvidia has announced that it will host GPU Technology Conference Asia in Beijing, China, On Dec 14 & 15, 2011. This is one of the events in its international series. ^[9]
