NASDAQ’s Cash Equity Volumes Continue To Deteriorate In September
NASDAQ (NASDAQ:NDAQ) saw 13% and 7% year on year (y-o-y) declines in its cash equity trading volumes in September in the U.S. and Europe, respectively. In contrast to the growing trading volumes in the first half of the year for the U.S., the exchange saw a 20% decline in Q3. A 2% decline in market share due to increased competition from established exchanges as well as the Investors’ Exchange, coupled with weak market conditions, have largely caused the decline.
Further, the exchange’s European trading volumes have been declining for over a year now. Amid uncertain political conditions in parts of Europe and a 7.4% decline in market share, the exchange saw 13% dip in volumes in Q3 2016.
Going forward, we expect growth in cash equity volumes, driven by continued volatility in the U.S. financial markets. However, the European volumes are likely to remain suppressed with macroeconomic uncertainty to prevail in the near term .
