NASDAQ’s Equity Options Volumes See Marked Improvement in June

NASDAQ’s equity options volumes saw a notable improvement, both in Europe and the U.S., in the month of June. For most of this year, equity option volumes in the U.S. had remained flat or declined. However, June saw a reversal in this trend, with a significant improvement (+14% y-o-y) in U.S. equity options volumes. Correspondingly, European equity options volumes also saw a sudden jump in June, growing 71% y-o-y. The primary contributor of this turnaround in volumes was likely the impact of the volatility caused by the U.K.’s Brexit vote. However, there was a decline in average rate per contract across the two regions, which could weigh on the revenue gains made through increased volumes.
