NASDAQ Sees Growth In U.S. Cash Equity Volumes, Offset By Declines In European Cash Equities In May
NASDAQ’s U.S. cash equities started 2016 off with remarkable growth. However, the growth slowed down in the following months, as the company faced intense competition and saw market share losses. In May, a rebound was seen in volumes, leading quarter-to-date volumes for U.S. cash equities to improve 12% year-on-year (y-o-y). In contrast, European cash equity volumes have consistently deteriorated in 2016 (except February). Going forward, we expect U.S. cash equities to see an increase in volumes, even as NASDAQ may lose market share, due to an industry-wide improvement. On the other hand, European cash equities are expected to continue the downtrend.
