An increase in cheap steel imports into the U.S. has negatively impacted the North American operations of steelmakers such as ArcelorMittal. Robust overall growth in demand for steel in the U.S. propped up the NAFTA division’s shipments and realized prices in 2014. However, the impact of the increase in steel imports was evident in 2015 (a year in which overall U.S. steel demand growth was fairly subdued), with the NAFTA division’s shipments and realized prices declining 8% and 13%, respectively, on a year-over-year basis, primarily due to competition from imports.
