Motorola Looking To Bolster Its Software Portfolio
Amid an environment where the telecom and networking domains are aggressively shifting from hardware- to software-based solutions, even the smart public safety domain is calling for more software solutions in order to increase the networks’ efficiency. Motorola Solutions (NYSE:MSI), the dominant player in the market, has made a couple of moves in the recent past in a bid to strengthen its software portfolio. The company launched its Wave 7000 solution last quarter to improve its “push-to-talk” (PTT) feature and last month acquired Spillman, a company that develops software for law enforcement and public-safety departments. Motorola’s hardware products are strong and the company seems to be backing them well with pertinent software. This should ultimately help Motorola kill competition from smaller players, which may have a pricing advantage, with its technological superiority.
Motorola’s Wave 7000 provides a highly reliable PTT platform that can be easily linked to a public or a private LTE network or Land Mobile Radio (LMR) networks, allowing optimized connections across networks and devices. Wave’s ability to connect at any network level makes it an efficient and reliable mode of critical PTT communications. And PTT is crucial for public safety as authorities want an uninterrupted constant connection with teams. This can go a long way in building Motorola’s trust with public safety authorities and help it gain a definitive competitive advantage over its smaller competitors.
Towards the end of last month, Motorola solutions announced its intent to acquire Spillman Technologies, as a part of its strategy to diversify its software portfolio and provide real-time data and analytics to its public safety customers. Spillman develops and provides computer aided device dispatch and record management software to over 1,700 agencies in the U.S. The deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2016, will not only help Motorola engage Spillman’s existing small and medium-sized clients, but the latter’s technology will gear up Motorola better for its existing large-size public safety clientele.
