Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has scheduled a Windows Phone developer summit in June 2012, in yet another attempt to appease app developers and push them to develop apps for Windows Phone. Reports suggest that Microsoft may not only launch new developer programs to attract leading iOS and Android app developers to its platform, but also unveil more details about Windows Phone Tango and Windows Phone Apollo, the next version of Windows Phone. Microsoft has been very aggressive in pursuing developers to create apps for Windows Phone. It has spent millions of dollars marketing Windows Phone, and is desperately trying to get top iOS and Android apps on Windows Phone. While Windows Phone now has more than 70,000 apps, its app count is still much lower that of iOS or Android, which are way ahead.

If Microsoft is able to bridge the app gap between Windows Phone and other platforms, coupled with its initiative to invade the budget smartphone segment, it could help it become one of the top players in the smartphone market in the coming years. Apple and Google have similar events for developers and platform enthusiasts, like WWDC and Google I/O.

Windows Phone, Xbox and other entertainment devices account for nearly 4% of Microsoft’s $40 Trefis price estimate, which stands nearly 25% above its market price.
