Altria’s shipment volume in the smokeable segment increased 1.2% as a an extra shipping day, trade inventory movements, and retail share gains offset the industry volume decline. After adjusting for the aforementioned factors, the company’s shipment volume rose 0.5%, while the industry volume fell 1%. While Marlboro’s retail share remained constant, the increase in Altria’s share was led by discount brands, driven by L&M. Cigar shipment volume increase was driven by Black & Mild.

The smokeless products segment’s domestic shipment volume for Q1 2016 increased 7.8%, driven by Copenhagen and Skoal, aided by the national expansion of Copenhagen Mint. Copenhagen brand’s retail share also increased 1.1 share points, while that of Skoal declined 0.6 share points.
