3M (NYSE:MMM) has launched a new range of structural adhesives that offer considerable advantages over the competitor products available in the market currently. These high performance structural adhesives called “3M Scotch Weld LSB Structural Adhesives” are aimed at large structure bonding applications. They are available in three different formulas: one flexible two part epoxy solution (LSB 90), and two toughened epoxy formulas (LSB60 and LSB60NS).
These structural adhesives, if successful, will further cement 3M’s position as a leading innovator and market leader in this segment. Industrial adhesives and chemicals is the most important division of 3M, accounting for nearly 30% of the stock’s value. It competes with companies such as DuPont (NYSE:DD) and GE (NYSE:GE). We have a Trefis price estimate of $97 for 3M, which is nearly 10% ahead of the current market price.
These new adhesives are an ideal alternative to mechanical fasteners like screws, rivets and welds. Apart from offering long-term resistance to impact and vibration, they also help decrease the work level and uncertainties associated with multiple production while offering significant end-use benefits to the customers.
A key strength of these adhesives is that it allows manufacturers to utilize very thin lightweight panels without worrying about tearing, cracking or distortion. The bonding that these adhesives offer also provide a viable solution to welding. In welding, workers are exposed to heat that can cause the ridges to burn, which often results in rework.
However, the bonded material of these adhesives can be applied to uneven patterns of a variety of panels with random shapes. This allows for bonding without creating stress or galvanic corrosion, thereby saving time for workers on drilling and surface refinishing. It also helps keep the structures clean and smooth. 3M Scotch-Weld Structural Adhesives are available in 400 ml EPX cartridges, drums and pails.
Due to these advantages, these adhesives might become the new standard in the market and can be one of the successful, innovative products from the 3M stable this year. If successful, the new product will have a good impact on the company’s top-line and bottom-line, as the adhesives unit is the most valuable business for 3M.
