Global M&A deal volume picked up in Q2 2016 after a particularly dismal start to the year, but activity levels remained lukewarm overall. Data compiled by Thomson Reuters shows that the total size of global M&A deals announced for the quarter was $949 billion – 36% higher than the $699 billion figure for the previous quarter, but 32% below the exceptionally strong $1.39 trillion reported a year ago. [1] The five largest U.S. investment banks captured a significant share of M&A deals announced in Q2 2016, as seen in the table below:

In terms of completed M&A deals, Q2 2016 was a good quarter thanks to the strong pipeline of M&A accumulated since early 2015. Globally, $803 billion in M&A deals were closed for the period – 17% higher than the figure for the previous quarter, and only slightly less than the $820 billion a year ago. U.S. investment banking giants grabbed the top 5 positions globally in terms of completed deals for the second consecutive quarter.
