Recently, Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) subsidiary Google announced an Android Skilling Program for India, under which it will train two million developers in India over the next three years. These developers will be provided end-to-end Android training which will enable them to build mobile apps on the platform. According to a 2015 Evans report, India will have four million software developers by 2018, forming the largest developer population in the world. However, less than 25% of these developers are currently trained to develop and build for the Android mobile platform. While this program has been launched under the Skill India initiative of the Indian government, we believe tapping into the largest software developer base in the world will work in Google’s favor. Engaging a large population on its Android platform will give the company a competitive edge over Apple and a strong foot holding in the growing Indian mobile market.

Strong Developer Base , More Android Apps Can Ensure Competitive Edge

While the Android ecosystem has the highest global market share, commanding more than 80% of the smartphone market and Apple’s iOS  a distant second at around 18%, Google is now looking to expand this platform to other smart devices such as connected cars and smart wearables. A strong base of trained developers who can build apps on its Android platform for various smart devices can be a very valuable asset for the company. The company plans to train nearly 4,000 faculty members in 2,000 universities in India to reach around 250,000 students in these universities every year. By making this curriculum freely available, Google hopes to make India a global leader in mobile development.  The smartphone market is growing at a fast pace in the country, primarily due to low penetration of smartphones. In Q1 2016 this market grew at 23% year on year and it is estimated that the country will have more than half a billion smartphone users in the next five years, doubling from the current number of quarter million. While Apple’s high priced phones might not find a significant share in this market, Google is ensuring that its Android platform is well poised to capture this growth. Training developers to build apps for its growing Android ecosystem can enable the company to retain its leading market share and support other smart devices on this platform. Apple is also investing heavily in India, but for now Google seems to have taken the lead to capture this growing market.
