General Electric (NYSE:GE) recently launched a wind turbine designed specifically to suit the environment of wind power generation sites in Brazil. [1] The new 1.85-82.5 wind turbine was showcased at the Brazil Wind Power Conference held in Rio de Janeiro last month. These turbines have improved energy generation capabilities which would improve the economics for wind farm developers as fewer wind turbines would be required in a farm to produce a set amount of electricity. The turbines business positions GE well to take advantage of the growing Brazilian wind power market, which grew by over 60% in 2011, and thereby add to the growth of its Energy Infrastructure business division.

We currently have a stock price estimate of $21.77 for the company, approximately 5% above its current market price.

The new 1.85-82.5 wind turbines

The 1.85-82.5 wind turbines are based on GE’s 1.5-megawatt class of wind turbines, which are installed in a variety of wind power environments. These new turbines are designed for higher wind speed sites of Brazil and are certified by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). They offer an 8% increase in annual electricity production at 9 m/s, which improves the economics for wind farm developers by reducing the number of wind turbines required to produce a set amount of electricity.

Brazil’s fast growing wind power generation capacity

Also, the wind power market in Brazil has been growing at a CAGR of nearly 45% over the past 5 years. According to a report by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Brazil added 583MW of wind power generation capacity in 2011, taking its total installed wind power capacity to over 1,500MW. And the council projects the nation to be one of the fastest-growing markets for wind power generation capacity over the next 5 years.

GE’s presence in Brazil’s wind power market

GE, which has installed 300 wind turbines in Brazil until now, is well-positioned to take advantage of this growth with the launch of this new turbine. The company is also planning to open two local service centers in the country with an investment of $1.5 million; the service centers will be located in the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia. GE has already received orders to install 600 turbines in the country over the next 2 years. ((GE Celebrates 300 Wind Turbines Installed in Brazil, August 30 2012, www.genewscenter.com))

Overall, the launch of the specially designed wind turbines will enable GE to take a larger share of the growth anticipated in the Brazilian wind power market, and this should give a boost to its wind power business.
