Q1 proved to be a strong quarter for the Chinese wireless industry, which saw the addition of over 19 million new subscribers. Market leader China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) added 7.6 million wireless subscribers during the quarter, while China Telecom (NYSE:CHA) – the smallest of the three carriers – added about 4.7 million subscribers, driven by strong 4G uptake (16.5 million 4G adds or migrations). China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) added a net of 6.6 million users during the quarter, driven by promotional activity and an increasing focus on improving its 4G coverage. However, it is important to note that Unicom now reports data for its mobile billing subscribers (which refers to subscribers who have revenue contribution for a given month) rather than its total subscriber base.
