Over the past four years, American Express’ top line has grown at a paltry 0.5% annually. However, its operating, pre-tax and profit margins have all increased during this period. This has led its EPS to grow by 15.2 percentage points. However, buying back roughly 12% of its outstanding share count over that period has also boosted its EPS by 15.9 percentage points, leading to a cumulative EPS growth of close to 31 percentage points.
