Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has a dominant presence in the cloud computing space, with its Amazon Web Services and other offerings focused primarily on enterprise users and developers. This week, it finally jumped into the consumer cloud storage space by rolling out desktop clients for Windows and Mac, which enable users to more effectively use its Amazon Cloud Drive service to store their personal documents in the cloud.  Amazon’s Cloud Drive competes primarily with Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Drive, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) SkyDrive and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iCloud.
Amazon’s Cloud Drive offers 5 GB of free online storage, and with the new apps, users will find it much easier to store their files in its cloud through explorer integration. Amazon’s move comes at a time when the cloud storage wars have intensified significantly. Google recently launched its own offering — Google Drive — and Microsoft made some major upgrades to SkyDrive to make it more competitive. Dropbox continues to be the leader in the space, and is tying up with major smartphone manufacturers like HTC and Samsung to drive adoption.

Amazon generates revenue through Cloud Drive by offering 5 GB of free storage and then charging for extra space. Cloud Drive is part of Amazon Web Services which accounts for around 3% of Amazon’s $222 Trefis price estimate, which stands close to its market price.Notes:
