Of the three legacy carriers, American Airlines had the largest fleet of aircraft in 2015. Further, the airline used the increased cash flows from fuel costs savings to revamp its existing fleet and reduced the average fleet age from 12 years to 11 years in 2015. Thus, American has the youngest fleet of aircraft among the top three US airlines, despite holding the largest fleet. On the other hand, the average fleet age of its competitors, United and Delta, increased during 2015, despite enjoying similar cost savings.
