The Government knows that a "Big Four" rather than the current "Big Three" will mean increased competition and therefore benefit fliers. They also know that even if the new Big Four try to dominate the market with higher prices and reduced customer service there are plenty of smaller airlines waiting with baited breath to jump in to the fray. That is the history of Commercial Aviation in the United States. The Government also is aware that to derail this deal now would cause mayhem. Too much has already been done such as HQ's having been moved, Union deals sealed (Overwhelming Union support for this deal cannot be overlooked by those who are "Union Friendly" either.), even the E.U. has approved it.
