Typical caustic usage is about .07 tons of caustic (as sodium carbonate) per ton of alumina, depending on the reactive silica content of the bauxite. Also calcining energy can be significant. Fluid bed calciners will consume 1450 BTU per pound of alumina, rotary kilns will consume as much as 1900 BTU per pound.
