This past week was harsh for the software sector as a whole. Most companies in the sector saw a drop in their stock prices with a only a few posting marginal gains. Here are a few important updates from the software sector, which could influence the stock of companies like Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Verisign (NASDAQ:VRSN) and Symantec (NASDAQ:SYMC).

Microsoft

Microsoft’s stock has seen a lot of movement this week and has ultimately ended up nearly flat. At the WPC 2011 event, it announced that it has sold more than 400 million Windows 7 licenses worldwide. It also announced that it has sold nearly 100 million copies of Office 2010 to businesses and retail customers. [1]

It also hinted that Windows 8 might be launched in 2012. It will release an update to Windows Phone 7 – Mango – in the coming months.

VeriSign

VeriSign renewed its contract with ICANN early this month, and remains the exclusive .com and .net domain registrar. Yesterday, it increased the .com and .net registration fees by 7% and 10% respectively, which should boost its margins, at least in the short term. [2]

Symantec

Symantec closed its acquisition of Clearwell Systems this week, for a purchase price of $390 million. [3] The acquisition will enable Symantec to improve the scope of its product offerings, and offer better information management capabilities to its customers.
